Set Design
As well as taking on the role as DSM, I also designed the set for Chicago. However due to the COVID-19 pandemic we had to cancel a week before the performance was due to be performed so unfortunately I didn’t get to see the set put together.
The designs themselves went through several iterations. The director was adament on having the band on the stage on a tiered stage, with the greenroom visible dressed to be a , which was a major struggle due to the size of the band and the stage dimensions. Eventually the director was convinced by myself, the Production manager and the Musical Director that it wasn’t going to work and I was given free reign to design the set. It to went through some iterations after discussions with the production team and the set builder. Ideas such as having prime audience seating on the extension of the stage as “members of the court” were eventually simplified to a standard and almost bare set. The colour, bar a lit up Chicago sign, would come from the costumes.
Below you can see the final designs in CAD form. For this show I created a CAD plan of the Priory centre stage and part of the auditorium, as no known plans exist.
